Despite a rich cultural history that includes such talented songwriters as Violeta Parra and Victor Jara, Chile is known by many for the harsh 17-year rule of General Agusto Pinochet. In that time, the arts were suppressed and the music industry destroyed. The mutilation and execution of Victor Jara was one of many crimes against those who were determined by Pinochet's regime to be enemies of the state for their beliefs. Today with a Democratic government supporting the arts, there is a huge rebirth of music in Chile. A cultural identity is being redefined in a modern renaissance. In rediscovering the songs and rhythms from their past and blending them with contemporary jazz, rock, blues and electronic music, Petroglyph Records' musicians are creating something uniquely Chilean. Their work reflects influences from around the globe but also the indelible imprint of living in a brutal dictatorship. The magic of this new voice is evident from the first chord. Collaborating for many years, these artists have an intuitive knowing of each other that only comes from sharing a struggle of great proportion. When they accompany each other, this knowing shows itself powerfully. Each Petroglyph artist is a master of their craft, with an ability to apply their instrument skillfully. Francesca Ancarola, beloved singer/songwriter of Chile; Antonio Restucci, guitar virtuoso and master of mandolin; Emilio Garcia, adept electric blues guitarist; Marcelo Aedo, bassist extrodinarre; and Muza, powerful vocalist. These six world class musicians easily carry their own shows. But in performing together, they offer the full force of their collective passions. A performance of Jara's Manifesto by this group can move the staunchest critic. There is no conflict in the way these artists blend their Chilean roots with the influences of world music, no trouble in following the melancholy of the past as it transitions into today's joy. Individual performances by each of
these artists are backed up by percussive rhythms that will change
the way you think about Chile. Amazing duos, such as Restucci and
Garcia, will get any audience's blood pumping with the captivating
visual stimuli of flamenco dancers, video footage of Chile's varied
and spectacular geography and a glimpse into life under Pinochet's
rule. This music crosses genre boundaries and its spirit captures
wide audience attention. |
